Choosing Joy on Purpose: Why Fun and Play Matter for Adults
We often think of joy as a feeling.
But Scripture frequently treats joy as something we intentionally cultivate.
Consider:
"The joy of the Lord is your strength." (Nehemiah 8:10)
Strength—not weakness.
Joy is presented as something that sustains us. And we often have to choose to have it as part of our lives.
My word of the year for 2026 is Joy. I regularly remind myself to choose joy – even when I don’t particularly feel that way.
Taking time for joy isn't neglecting your responsibilities.
It's honoring the way God designed you.
Here are some ideas for fun activities that may help you feel better and introduce more fun into your life.

• Go kite flying in the park or on a beach – make sure there is plenty of room for the kites to fly
• Go on a scavenger hunt – if you have young children, make sure the clues are easy
• Take a nature walk – create a list of things to look for and check off – butterflies, red flowers, squirrels, etc.
• Ice cream outing – or better yet, making homemade ice cream
Something I find really ironic is that adults often stop playing because they think it's unproductive. Yet researchers are increasingly finding that playfulness is associated with emotional intelligence, resilience, social connection, and overall well-being. Things we all need.
Translation:
Children play because it feels good. Adults should play because it's good for them.
I don’t want to add one more thing to our To Do Lists – but this one makes a lot of sense – and we feel better afterward. If fun isn’t part of your regular routine, you may need to make some adjustments.
You don’t have fun every day (although, why wouldn’t you want to?) if that feels overwhelming. Just start with 1-2 activities a week that you enjoy. And if you’re not sure what sounds fun, experiment a little. Try some things and see what fits.

Additional ideas:
• Blow bubbles – kids and dogs like this – and I have to say I enjoy it as well!
• Skip rocks across water – this is a skill that I don’t possess – sadly. So if you are good at this, by all means teach it to some of the younger generation.
• Swing on a playground swing, or get on a see-saw. I’m always amazed at how long my grandchildren can enjoy a simple swing.
• Catch lightning bugs – this always signals the start of summer for me. Please be sure and release the bugs at the end of the evening.
