Going to the Dogs: The Surprising Health Benefits of Dog Ownership
What if I could tell you a fun, simple and enjoyable way to lower your stress level, become more active, lower your blood pressure, improve your social life, and keep depression away? Would you be interested?
Most people would be surprised to hear the answer – get a dog! Research shows that all the above are benefits of dog ownership – plus others.
Research-Backed Benefits
Pet owners over 65 have fewer doctor visits – they seek medical help about 30% less than people who don't own a pet. That's great news! Dog ownership also encourages physical activity (walks!), provides consistent emotional support, reduces loneliness, and gives you a built-in reason to go outside daily.
My Personal Experience
I own 3 small dogs (well, maybe they own me) and they are definitely my furry babies. They add humor, activity, love and enjoyment to my life. I truly look forward to getting home after work and getting out to walk them. I get in some steps, enjoy the natural light, and see what my neighbors are up to.
My rescue dog Daisy is now my little princess-diva, and along with her brothers Bugs and Chewy, keeps me grounded and grateful.
If You're Considering It
Please DON'T adopt an animal if you're not prepared to take good care of it. Dogs need a good-size yard to run around in and should be walked at least once a day. They are also pack animals, so consider getting more than one and they'll keep each other — and you — company. Over the years I've written hundreds of "canine prescriptions" for clients. Wouldn't you like a furry bundle of energy to be absolutely delighted when you get home?
